Year: 1998-2003
Grant #: Sub-grant from Madecor with Asian Development Bank (ADB) Funding
Grant Amount: $706,462
Location: Indonesia

In Indonesia, Virginia Tech consultants are working to train farmers and trainers in how to cultivate coffee, cocoa, tea, cashew, cotton and black pepper with minimal pesticide use.

Farmers weigh green beans in Mali.
They also conduct training in other environmentally-friendly and economically advantageous techniques. In particular, Virginia Tech is involved with curriculum development for Farmer Field Schools, a participatory learning process that helps farmers discover answers for themselves and become experts in farming and marketing their crops. Virginia Tech is developing materials to help farmers manage their pests with natural control techniques that utilize predators, parasitoids and pathogens.
