IPM Global Theme
Programs:
Insect-Transmitted
Viruses
Most plant-infecting viruses rely on insect
vectors to spread. Most of these vectors are in the
Order Homoptera and include aphids, leafhoppers,
mealybugs, and whiteflies. Given the efficient nature of
this transmission and the explosive nature of the
populations of these insects, particularly in tropical
and subtropical regions of the world, these plant
viruses have become increasingly important constraints
to sustainable crop production globally. One global
theme of the IPM CRSP is virus management.
Two IPM CRSP programs that address
these issues are:
Integrated Management of Thrips-Borne
Tospoviruses in Vegetable Cropping Systems in South Asia
and the Mekong Region
