Virginia Tech’s
Center for European Studies and Architecture (CESA) is the university’s
European campus center and base for operations and support of its
programs in the region. The center’s location in Ticino, the
Italian-speaking canton of Switzerland, is also close to major northern
Italian cities such as Milan.
A wide variety
of semester-long and summer study abroad programs provide diverse
learning experiences for undergraduate and graduate students. The
residential learning communities based at CESA go far beyond the traditional
classroom experience and take advantage of Ticino’s strategic
location. With spectacular natural beauty, varied educational opportunities,
and rich cultural and historical heritage in the area, CESA offers
the potential for a unique international experience. A faculty member
from nearby Lugano provides language instruction in Italian. Most
other courses are taught in English by faculty members from the Blacksburg,
Virginia home campus of the university.
While many CESA
programs are tailored for the educational and research development
of Virginia Tech faculty members and students, another important focus
is collaboration with nearby institutions to arrange faculty and student
exchanges.
As CESA begins
its second decade of operation with a July 2004 celebration, Virginia
Tech foresees even greater successes in facility and program development
to further the university’s missions of research, teaching,
and outreach.
