Spring 2003 Events

Photography Exhibition

In collaboration with the Department of Architecture Special Programs, Phi Beta Delta sponsored a photography exhibition produced by three senior architecture students who have participated in recent architecture study abroad programs. The exhibition was mounted from March 9-18, 2003 at the XYZ Gallery on Main Street in downtown Blacksburg.

Essay Competition

We have continued the chapter tradition of conducting an annual student essay competition focusing on the topic of international education. As in years past, there was a large response and six awards were given. This included three awards each for undergraduate and graduate entries. Recipients for “best essay” were Michael Edson (undergraduate) and Siddharth Mahapatra (graduate). Their papers were published in the Fall 2003 issue of the Global University newsletter.

Induction Ceremony

The spring 2003 induction ceremony was fittingly held on April 9 in Hillcrest Hall, one of the oldest buildings on campus and presently the home of the University Honors program and the Honors Student Residence Hall. Twenty-eight students, six faculty and four honorary members were inducted during the ceremony. The honorary members included the new University Provost, Dr. Mark McNamee; the Vice Provost for University Outreach and International Programs, Dr. Clark Jones; the Dean of the College of Science, Dr. Lay Nam Chang; and the Former Dean of the College of Human Resources and Education, Dr. Janet Johnson.

The featured speaker for 2003 was Professor Josiah Tlou in the Department of Teaching and Learning. He is the 2002 recipient of the University Alumni Award for Excellence in International Programs. Professor Tlou has been widely recognized for his leadership in building effective teacher training programs in the developing democracies of southern Africa. <<< back
