Carbon from Communities

Year: 2002-2005
Grant #: NASA Grant NAG13-2003
Grant Amount: $143,236
Location: Mali

The Carbon from Communities project is testing a protocol that uses NASA satellite information to provide an efficient means to inferentially assess carbon stock changes attributable to community-based agriculture and natural resource management decisions in Mali.

Under improved management, West African pastures may serve as major carbon sinks.

Research to enhance carbon sequestration by improving agricultural management at the community level has the dual benefits of increasing agricultural productivity and food security for resource-limited regions while developing the potential for future participation in carbon trading programs. This project combines the strengths of NASA technology with ongoing CRSP applied research and community development activities. It also provides scientific and social contributions to a broad end-user community that includes West African farmers, herders, community leaders, scientists, NGOs, national and supranational agricultural and environmental institutions, and policy-makers. Through a subgrant from the University of Georgia, OIRED/Virginia Tech provides leadership for the northern site in Mali that is examining the carbon sequestering potential of improved community-based pasture management.
