Pre-Approved Non-Virginia Tech Programs

If the Virginia Tech sponsored programs do not meet your needs, a wealth of programs sponsored by other US institutions and organizations exist. The costs for these programs tend to fall in between what in-state students and out-of-state-students pay to attend Virginia Tech, making these programs great deals for out-of-state students. You are strongly encouraged to look first for a suitable program from the following pre-approved list. This is suggested because:

1  Virginia Tech financial aid, including scholarships and grants, can be applied to these programs. For this to happen, you will need to fill out the Study Abroad Program Documentation Form to start the Consortium Agreement process in the Education Abroad Office after you have been accepted.

2  These programs have excellent reputations and have hosted many VT students.

Education Abroad Office

You must submit a copy of your acceptance letter to the Education Abroad Office.  Although you will get most of your program information from the organizations below, you still need to get Virginia Tech-specific information from the Education Abroad Office and attend a mandatory pre-departure session. The office also has resources on most of the pre-approved programs.

Program Comparison

The following providers have programs that will appear to vary significantly in cost, so find out exactly what is included in the program fee: housing, tuition, meals, insurance, travel, etc.  These programs vary from "island" programs, consisting of American students only, with an American-style curriculum not integrated into a foreign system, to "immersion" programs where students are immersed into a country's culture and academic system.

Academics

It is your responsibility to get your coursework pre-approved by your academic advisor BEFORE you go.  See the Course Credit Approval page.  If you go abroad on one of these programs, you will be on a "leave of absence," and all programs fees will be paid directly to the organization you choose, not to Virginia Tech.  There is a $50 placement fee payable to Virginia Tech, which will be billed directly to your student account.

Contact the programs directly for more information.  Pay attention to the various timelines and application deadlines.
