Passport
We strongly
recommend that you apply for a passport NOW if you do not
already have one. You cannot obtain your student visa (the
document that allows you to reside legally in your host country)
until you have a passport. It can take up to two months to get
a passport in addition to another two months for a visa in some
cases. Do not wait until the last minute!
If you are over
18, then your passport will be good for ten years, so you can
continue traveling after your study abroad experience. If you
already have a passport, check the expiration date. If you were
under 18 when you got it, then it is only valid for five years.
Before you
apply, you will need:

The passport application which can be obtained at a post office
or online at http://travel.state.gov/

Proof of
U.S. citizenship such as your original birth certificate

Two
recent identical 2 inch by 2 inch passport photos which can be got at
Kinko's, Gentry, or Wal-Mart
4 Proof
of identity such as a driver's license
