Information for Students: Departing | Currently Abroad | Returning

Center for European Studies and Architecture (CESA)

What and where is it?

Virginia Tech's 200-year old facility, Casa Maderni, is in Riva San Vitale, Switzerland. This serves as a Tech "campus" on Lake Lugano near the Italian border. The casa facilities include computers, an architecture studio, a small library, classrooms, and dormitory rooms. Italian language instruction is offered by local professors, while other courses are taught by VT faculty. This program is exclusively for VT students. Visit the CESA website for more information.

This type of program is sometimes known as an "island" program, meaning you will not be integrated into a foreign school system. Instead, you will take courses that would normally be taught at Virginia Tech, alongside other Virginia Tech students.

Where will I live?

Students live in the villa or in a nearby apartment. All meals are served family style in the villa.

When can I go?

Anyone can study at CESA during either the fall or spring semester or for an academic year. Your major and academic interests dictate when you are eligible to study at CESA.

Fall Semester Business Program

The fall semester is designed exclusively for juniors in the Pamplin College of Business. Students take 18 credits of Finance, Management, and Marketing courses. Additionally, 3 credits are awarded for participation in the study abroad program, for a total of 21 credits for the entire semester. Courses are taken two at a time in modules of five weeks each, offering an opportunity for intensive learning.

Spring Semester European Studies Program

Students take five mandatory courses for a total of 15 credits. All classes deal specifically with aspects of European culture and society. Open to students from any college and major, even though it is sponsored by the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences. In Spring Semester 2007, the program offers the following courses:

  • Humanities 1604: Humanities and the Arts (fulfills Core Area 2)

  • Humanities 1324: The Modern World (fulfills Core Areas 2, 3 and 7)

  • Humanities 1224: The Renaissance (fulfills Core Area 2)

  • Music 4124: History of European Music (fulfills Core Area 6)

  • Italian 1106 Elementary Italian (will fulfill language requirement for most majors)

In future years, other courses will be offered that generally satisfy several core curriculum requirements for students. For specifics, please consult with the the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures: Lois Doherty (doherty@vt.edu), Andrew Becker (andrew.becker@vt.edu) or Trudy Harrington Becker (thbecker@vt.edu). Classes meet Mondays through Thursdays, allowing free time for individual travel on weekends.

Fall and Spring Architecture Programs

The College of Architecture and Urban Affairs offers flexible studio, travel, and class programs based at the CESA villa throughout the year.

Europe Studio Travel

Various programs are available for architecture students with a study and travel itinerary prepared specially for each academic session. The program is eight weeks long with brief residency periods and travel. Different courses are offered each semester.

Europe Studio Residence

Conducted at CESA, the location lends itself to valuable short study trips into Italy, France, Austria, Germany and the surrounding areas in Switzerland. This program will include numerous visits, interviews, and presentations with professionals. Different courses are offered each semester. The program is available for the fall and spring, and is limited to 14 students. Students can earn up to 15 semester credits selected from the particular offerings of any given semester.

Costs

The costs to study at CESA are different than the regular Virginia Tech tuition, fees, room and board and will vary by program.
