Financial Aid

Receiving Financial Aid

If you do not receive aid, you may qualify for it the semester you will be abroad because your costs may differ from those used to calculate your financial need in other years.

If you receive financial aid including loans, grants, and/or scholarships, it will "travel with you" on all Virginia Tech programs for which you pay your tuition and fees to Virginia Tech as usual (CESA, VT summer programs, ISEP and Bi-lateral). On pre-approved non-VT programs, your financial aid will apply to your program, but it will not be released until 1) you have arrived at your program site and 2) a program official has verified that you have enrolled in a full-time course load. PLEASE NOTE: financial aid can not be disbursed until the beginning of the Virginia Tech semester that correlates to your program overseas. You may or may not be able to use your aid on a non-VT program that is not pre-approved. Consult early with a study abroad advisor if you wish to use aid on one of these programs.  Remember that you MUST be enrolled in the equivalent of a full-time course load for Virginia Tech purposes in order to receive financial aid from Virginia Tech.

It is your responsibility to notify the Education Abroad Office of your financial aid situation and complete all required paperwork. Failure to do so may result in delaying the release of your aid, not receiving aid, or going into repayment. You may not receive financial aid if you do not start the process early enough.

Financial Aid Process

1  Fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) available online or in the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid in 200 Student Services Building. This form must be on file in order for you to be considered for any type of aid. Fill it out even if you are unsure if you are going to go abroad at this point. It can only help the process in the long run.

2  Fill out the Study Abroad Program Documentation Form (use the 06-07 form for Fall 06, Spring 07 and Summer 07 programs). This form details all of the costs associated with studying abroad, including airfare. Please fill out the top half of the form and bring it to us at the Education Abroad Office for us to sign and submit to the Financial Aid office.

3  Meet with a financial aid counselor to learn more about what types of aid or assistance you may qualify for, or if you have any questions. Because your aid will not be released until you are in your host country, you may want to ask about preliminary loans to cover up front costs.

4  Download and print the Financial Aid Checklist to ensure that you complete the entire financial aid process properly!

Key Points

1  Complete your FAFSA and Study Abroad Program Documentation Form as soon as possible.

2  Contact your financial aid counselor to discuss your financial aid and loan options.

3  Money will not disburse until 1) you are at the host school and officially enrolled in classes that are equivalent to a full-time course load at Virginia Tech, and 2) the Virginia Tech semester or summer term has nearly started. The Education Abroad office from the overseas university must fill out a Verification of Enrollment Form and submit it to the Education Abroad office, who will in turn notify the VT financial aid office. Keep in mind that a student cannot confirm enrollment.

4  Communicate this information to others who are helping you with financial resources (i.e. your parents)!

Non-Virginia Tech Programs

To enable the Education Abroad Office to prepare the Consortium Agreement for a program that is not on the pre-approved list, you must bring the following documentation to 1820 Litton Reaves Hall:

1  A copy of your acceptance letter to the program in which you intend to participate

2  Complete costs of the program

3  Dates of program and credit information

4  A copy of your Permission to Take Courses Elsewhere Form
