Frequently
Asked Questions
Isn't education abroad expensive?
Through careful planning and direct
exchange arrangements in many cases, Virginia Tech programs are
among the most affordable you can find, some costing less than
comparable time on campus.
Can I use my financial aid
abroad?
Yes!
I just don't have room in my
schedule to go abroad. Won't education abroad keep me from
graduating on time?
With careful planning, education
abroad can fit right into your degree program so that your
graduation isn't delayed. We can arrange programs that
last just a few weeks during the summer or winter break, a full
semester, or an entire year. Going abroad is flexible and
we'll find a program that will work around your schedule.
My major isn't really
'International'. What could I study while abroad?
You don't need to have an
international major. Regardless of your major, many
countries will offer degrees in it and therefore have
corresponding courses. You can also take courses in your
minor, satisfy general education requirements, or try something
new.
Don't you have to be an 'A'
student?
No, but you do need to be
academically ready to study overseas. Generally, a GPA of
2.5 is required. However, exceptions are sometimes made
based on extenuating circumstances.
I don't speak a foreign language. Can I still study abroad?
Yes! We have exchange programs
in many countries where English is the native language, such as
Australia and Scotland. We also have programs in countries
like Sweden and the Netherlands where your courses will be
taught in English even though it isn't the native language.
Isn't it going to be difficult?
Education abroad is challenging but
we will provide an orientation program before your departure,
introduce you to Virginia Tech students who have been on similar
programs, give you information about getting your passport, and
much more.
When should I go abroad?
Your education abroad program can be
arranged for anytime after your freshman year. Many
students also choose to delay graduation and by going abroad for
a semester after they have finished their degree requirements
here.
When should I start my research
and planning?
Now! It's never too early to
start planning. Ideally a year in advance of your
departure allows sufficient time for thorough planning and
preparation. However, application early in the semester
preceding your departure is absolutely essential.
Where can I get more information
about opportunities abroad?
Come in to the Education Abroad
Office in 1820 Litton Reaves Hall. You make an appointment
with one of our peer advisors through this website, and the peer
advisor will discuss program options with you in detail.
