Suggestions for Coping With
Re-Entry
1 Expect things
to be different.

Start or continue to write in your journal.
3 Talk to
others who have been overseas and have gone through re-entry
shock.
4 Talk with a
counselor to help you sort out your feelings.
5 Cook a
typical meal of your host culture for family or friends.
6 Get to know
people who are newcomers from overseas, and help them adjust to
the United States.
7 Take a
course on international literature, politics, development, art,
etc.
8 Form or join
a discussion group.
9 Become
involved in campus-based international activities such as
serving as a host or language partner.
10 Try to be a
roommate or tutor for an international student.
11 Volunteer to
talk about the host country in local schools or organizations.
12 Keep alive
language learned overseas by participating in conversation
circles.
13 Pursue
graduate fellowships, scholarships, and work abroad activities.
14 Volunteer at
various education abroad events on campus.
15 Assist in
planning activities for international students.
16 Design
promotional materials for education abroad.

Read the international press.

Join an
international club.
