Information for Students: Departing | Currently Abroad | Returning

Information for Parents

Greetings from the Education Abroad Office! Studying abroad will likely be one of the most rewarding and challenging experiences your son or daughter will ever have! Our office thanks you for your support in assisting your son or daughter with his or her plans of study. While abroad your son or daughter may live in and learn about a culture different from their own, acquire proficiency in another language, gain intercultural communication skills, get a different perspective on their studies, and develop life long friendships and professional contacts.

As a parent, we know you are concerned about your student going abroad. We hope you will take the time to explore our website and learn about education abroad. Please familiarize your self with the information in the study abroad or work abroad sections so that you can discuss options with your student. To help the entire education abroad experience run as smoothly as possible, please read the relevant sections as your student prepares to depart, is in their host country, and returns from abroad. For information about health, safety, travel resources and all other issues, please see the relevant student sections of this website.

Our office provides student support in several ways. Students are initially advised during their program selection to gain familiarity with the options available. A pre-departure orientation focusing on logistics and cultural issues is provided to students. Our office fields questions and concerns from students abroad. When the student returns, our office translates and approves academic transcripts. Please contact us if you have any questions about Virginia Tech Education Abroad that are not answered on our website.
